Autofocusing on Your GemCam
Quick Answer
If your GemCam is not focusing correctly, the most common cause is incorrect camera distance from the jewelry. The GemCam has a minimum focal range of 5–10 cm (2–4 in). Resetting autofocus or adjusting focus manually in the GemHub will resolve most issues.
Before You Start
-
Make sure your GemCam is connected via USB-C / USB-A cable
-
Log in to the GemHub
-
Have a clean microfiber cloth available in case the lens needs cleaning

Steps
Follow these steps in order. Stop as soon as the focus issue is resolved.
Check camera distance. Position the GemCam so the jewelry fills approximately 70% of the frame. The GemCam has a minimum focal range of 5–10 cm (2–4 in). If the camera is too close or too far, autofocus will not work correctly.
Reset autofocus. In the GemHub, toggle the Autofocus function off, then back on again. You must complete both steps — toggling off alone is not enough to reset it.

Adjust focus manually. If autofocus is still not sharp, drag the focus slider in the GemHub until the image becomes clear.

Reconnect the USB cable. Disconnect the USB-C / USB-A cable and reconnect it. Wait a few seconds for GemHub to detect the camera, then test focus again.
Clean the lens. Gently wipe the GemCam lens with a clean microfiber cloth. Dust or fingerprints can cause soft or blurry images even when the camera is correctly positioned.
Expected Result
The jewelry appears sharp and in focus in the GemHub preview. Autofocus locks cleanly when the camera is aimed at the jewelry from within the correct focal range.
If This Does Not Work
If your GemCam is still not focusing after completing all steps above, contact GemIQ support. Include the details listed in the Need More Help? section below.
Understanding Depth of Field
Depth of field (DoF) refers to the range within an image that appears sharp. For tall, layered, or large jewelry pieces, achieving 100% sharpness across the entire item in a single shot may not be possible — this is a physical limitation of any camera, not a defect.
-
For a complete product view, consider shooting a 360-degree video.
-
For large items like necklaces, use GemCam for close-up detail shots and a smartphone camera for full-length shots.
Common Mistakes
Positioning the GemCam less than 5 cm (2 in) from the jewelry.
Only toggling autofocus off without toggling it back on — both steps are required for the reset to take effect.
Using GemCam to capture full-length shots of large items — GemCam is optimized for close-ups.
Overlooking a dirty lens as the cause of persistent soft focus.
